THE BALLAD OF THE ICE CREAMSMITH
Deep in the village of Lower Mills, The Ice Creamsmith does stand,
At the very end of Dorchester Ave., with an ice cream scoop in his hand.
Since ’76 he’s stood his post, many hours a day on his feet,
With his loyal helpers by his side serving up that delicious treat.
His cadre of skilled and stalwart aides make ice cream in the room below.
With a craftsman’s hands and a watchful eye, top quality’s all they know!
They ply their trade through summer’s heat on truly a daily basis
To provide that cold and creamy treat for this Dorchester oasis.
And the servers wield their mighty scoops with arms of sinew and steel
As the grownups wait with impatient desire and the children laugh and squeal!
The richness and flavor is what they crave, whether ice cream soda or frappe
Or sundae or split, or just a plain cone, which they lick fast to keep off their lap!
For some the plain ice cream is just not enough, and a mixin’ is what they desire.
Adding candy or nuts to their ice cream scoop, and no matter the price goes higher!
To watch the servers’ deftness and skill as they mix the ice cream on the board,
With a push and a twist and a magical flip, a custom flavor’s the sweet reward!
And if ice cream’s forbidden by diet or doc’ and they must find another way,
Then a cool tasty treat may still be theirs with frozen yogurt or fruit sorbet.
There’s the tall display freezer (what treasures it holds) filled with ice cream
pizzas and pies,
And those ice cream cakes, decorated and made by the Ice Creamsmith’s hands, skilled
and wise.
Yes, the Ice Creamsmith’s job is yeoman’s work, serving fathers, sons, mothers and sisters,
Through the aching feet and sweaty brow, the sore muscles and even some blisters!
But the payoff is knowing, when all’s said and done, and the time finally comes to rest,
That people from near and far all agree: THE ICE CREAMSMITH IS THE BEST!!!
